"summary": "WHERE THE WALK STARTS, AND HOW FAR IT MAY WIDEN. 1.21 made these domains HONEST (a null type yields a null score, so we stopped asserting saas tactics about an investor-relations page); it could not make us find a funnel that exists somewhere we never looked. Two mechanisms, measured on the 29-domain enterprise cohort (data/enterprise-seeds*.txt). (1) CORPORATE CHROME WAS SEEDING FUNNELS. discoverProductEntries spawns a SIBLING funnel from each distinct non-SKIP top-level nav segment, and on a listed company the nav reads Investors / Sustainability / Leadership / Our Purpose. Nine of 29 published a primary rooted at a sibling and five were chrome: pepsico /investors (EARNINGS RESULTS, Registered Shareholders), wbd /impact, echostar /company, tapestry /responsibility walking to a SUPPLIER LIST, tysonfoods /who-we-are. generalmills spawned a walk on /slavery-and-human-trafficking-statement. The read-time primary rule prefers any row that SCORED over one that did not, so on a corporate splash homepage - where the home walk routinely scores 0 - whichever chrome sibling happened to score took the published slot. SKIP_SRC gains a corporate-chrome group on the rule it already applied to about/careers/press/legal: a path naming the company INSTITUTIONAL IDENTITY OR OBLIGATIONS is not somewhere a customer converts. BLOCKLIST, NOT ALLOWLIST, and that is forced - a positive product vocabulary was tried and rejected in 1.18 because real product sections are named after the product (vpn.com /vpn/, /cybersecurity/), which no token list can contain; chrome is named from a small stable vocabulary, which is exactly why it is blockable and product is not. EVERY TOKEN NAMES A MEASURED ROW, and the ones deliberately NOT added each are a product section somewhere real: brands/our-brands (a CPG catalogue), media (a stock-media product), solutions/industries (B2B product lines). MEASURED before and after on live pages: sibling entries across the cohort fall 76 to 69, all 14 removed are chrome, and because the seeder fills to MULTI_FUNNEL_MAX two freed slots were taken by REAL commercial sections - verizon gained /plans/, clorox gained /category/. 16 of 29 sites are byte-identical. Across the 313 distinct funnel roots observed in a 200-slug corpus sample plus the cohort, 20 are newly skipped and EVERY ONE is chrome; zero commercial paths move. (2) DISCOVERY RAN ONCE, ON THE FRONT DOOR. discoverFunnelLinks has run EXACTLY ONCE since it existed, on the entry page. On a large domain the homepage is a brand splash whose links are editorial, so it UNDER-FILLS the step budget and the walk dies at depth 2 - the entry matched 1 of 3 slots on pepsico, clorox, dominos, royalcaribbean, carnival, churchdwight, tjx and airbnb - while a sibling starting one click in reaches depth 4 on the same site, because a sibling re-runs discovery at its own entry (clorox published home>p2 scoring 0 while its products>p2>p3>p4 sibling scored 30). The sibling mechanism was accidentally compensating for single-shot discovery, and it compensated by seeding from the nav. Discovery now runs a SECOND time, at HOP 1 ONLY, ONLY when the entry under-filled the budget, and appends ONLY conv and descend links. THIS IS NOT PER-HOP DISCOVERY - that is a crawl with no stopping rule, and a probe that once modelled the walker that way reported depths the crawler could never produce. Only conv/descend, because a lateral mid link one click in is a DIFFERENT section and appending one publishes a CHIMERA: two funnels stitched into one row under one funnel_sig. No extra navigation - captureStep leaves the page on that step. THE CONTAINMENT PROPERTY, stated precisely rather than generously: a walk whose ENTRY PAGE already filled the step budget never re-discovers and is byte-identical. An UNDER-FILLED walk may now gain depth, funnel_sig, score and screenshots, on future crawls only. Control set measured live before and after: vpn.com portal 1, vpn.com/vpn 3, notion 3, allbirds 3 all IDENTICAL paths; top10vpn 2 to 3 (+1 descend under the same /reviews) and nngroup 2 to 3 (+1 conv to /accounts/register) are the intended gains. Enterprise: carnival 2 to 3 reaching /shop/cart, clorox 2 to 3 reaching a product page; verizon, dollargeneral and hersheyland unchanged at 3; pepsico honestly unchanged at 2 and tysonfoods/tapestry honestly 1. The four bounds live in walk/rediscover.js as PURE FUNCTIONS rather than as an if inside the walk, because worker/scan-do.js imports @cloudflare/playwright and cannot be imported under Node - every test that has wanted to assert on it has matched SOURCE TEXT, which pins today wording instead of the rule. test/discovery-entry-scope.test.js gates both rules and every exclusion case NAMES A COMMERCIAL PATH THAT MUST STILL PASS (a tightening can always look correct by detecting nothing - the 1.18 lesson). Mutation-checked five ways, each red at the assertion that owns the rule. WHAT THIS DOES NOT DO, deliberately: the read-time primary ordering is UNTOUCHED. Sizing it first is why - 19 of a 200-slug random sample (9.5%, so ~137 published rows) are primaries rooted at a non-home entry, and in the general corpus those roots are overwhelmingly LEGITIMATE product sections (pricing 57, features 13, use-cases 9, signup 7). Forbidding a sibling primary would have broken ~130 correct rows, with no re-crawl, to fix five. That is a measured rejection, not a cautious one. CONSEQUENCE: the wrong rows stay published until re-crawled - scores freeze at crawl time. Absence of evidence still cannot separate a site with no funnel from a walker that missed one; better discovery RAISES THE FLOOR and every surface still reads no funnel found within our walk. "summary": "BEHAVIOUR CHANGE - scores move, and some rows stop having a score at all. Two defects with one root cause: the classifier had no way to say none-of-the-above, so it fabricated a denominator. (1) The real-product rescue accepted pricePoints >= 3 as sufficient pricing evidence, and the price extractor scrapes ANY dollar figure from body text - pepsico.com /investors yielded three financial figures and was typed SAAS, then scored against free trials and pricing tiers. Structural evidence is now required: a pricing_tiers component, a real /pricing URL, or recurring-billing vocabulary. Measured safe twice before shipping - replaying the classifier over 34 stored corpus runs changed 0 classifications including all 5 golden fixtures, and of 89 sampled saas funnels exactly one depends on the removed clause (teahose.com, a directory whose prices are scraped funding figures - that reclassification is the fix working). (2) classifyFunnelType may now return NULL when ZERO funnel primitives are observed - no cart, checkout, pricing, signup, trial, demo, lead form or affiliate CTA anywhere in the walk - and a null type yields score NULL with band No funnel found, never a number. That guard is load-bearing: appliesTo() treats an unknown type as every-tactic-applies, so without it a null type would run the FULL rubric and return a confident score. content and null are different facts and the boundary is stated: content = primitives present but below the typing threshold, null = nothing fired. THE LABEL IS A CLAIM ABOUT THE MEASUREMENT, NEVER THE BUSINESS - absence of evidence cannot separate a site with no funnel from a walker that missed one, so every surface reads no funnel found within our walk. On the 29-domain enterprise cohort this reclassifies 9 and moves 6 to No funnel found. Issue 201. ",
"public": "Roentgen 1.21.0 stops guessing a business model from a few dollar figures on the page, and it can now say a page has no funnel at all instead of scoring one anyway. A page needs real pricing structure, a pricing table, a dedicated pricing URL, or billing language, before it's classified as SaaS, so a page full of financial figures with no actual pricing can no longer score against free-trial and tier tactics it never had. If the walk finds no cart, checkout, pricing, signup, trial, demo, or lead form anywhere on the site, the report now reads 'no funnel found' instead of a number: a claim about what the walk saw, not a verdict on the business."

"summary": "PERSISTENCE ONLY - zero behaviour change, no detector touched, no score moves, and a PATCH release for the same reason 1.18.1 was one: the rows written before and after it stay separable. The walk has classified the bands of EVERY step since 1.1 (design.skeleton is set per step and every step design.json is persisted to R2), but only ONE of them ever reached a store anything reads. scan-do wrote captured[0].skeleton - the ENTRY step, always - into teardowns.skeleton_json, and worker/teardown-builder.js stepView is an explicit field list that never carried skeleton at all, so teardown.json carried none. MEASURED on dochost.io at depth 3: 01-home has 8 bands in D1; 02-pricing has nav, hero, pricing, content, faq, footer in R2 only; 03-signup is legitimately empty. A dedicated pricing page - the best pricing specimen this corpus owns - contributed nothing to /sections, /templates or the library, while the homepage pricing band counted. Corpus-wide that is 736 of 1,262 walked pages invisible. THIS IS THE THIRD FIELD LOST TO AN EXPLICIT ALLOW-LIST PROJECTION in this codebase (captured.map ate the 1.12 discovery telemetry for two engine versions; stepView ate this one since 1.1; the library facade dropped element_type the same week). The pattern is now asserted rather than remembered. Every step is now written to a new page_skeletons table keyed (teardown_id, step_n), encoded identically to teardowns.skeleton_json so one parser serves both, and stepView carries skeleton so teardown.json stops being lossy. An EMPTY skeleton is written rather than skipped - a thin signup page measuring zero bands is a MEASURED absence and must stay distinguishable from a page nobody looked at (23 of 83 sampled non-entry steps are legitimately empty). Existing crawls are recovered by POST /api/v1/admin/backfill-page-skeletons, which reads the design.json already in R2: NO re-crawl, no browser, no score, fact or stamp touched. NOTHING READS THE NEW TABLE YET. Recovering these pages roughly doubles pages_measured (404 -> ~850) and section instances (1039 -> ~1900), and those are published copy on four surfaces, so the read path ships behind PAGE_TIER_ENABLED=false and the flip is a deliberate, separately-measured decision. Existing scores unaffected in both states.",

"summary": "THE WALK CAN NOW ACT, NOT ONLY NAVIGATE - and only claims it when it can prove it. Measured before this: 12 of 88 ecommerce primaries reached cart/checkout (14%). The cause was structural, not vocabulary: walkFunnel discovered URLs and goto'd them, while on most Shopify/DTC stores the cart is a JS drawer opened by a BUTTON, so there is no URL for discovery to find. allbirds walked / -> /collections/... -> /products and stopped at the product page even at hop depth 5. The walk now makes ONE add-to-cart attempt on the last captured step and adds a `cart` step ONLY when walk/cart.js verifies it. TWO GATES, BOTH REQUIRED: a strict cart-quantity INCREASE between a before and an after reading taken from the SAME source, AND an IDENTITY match - the clicked product's title tokens or price present in the resulting cart. Delta alone is fooled by auto-added gifts, shipping insurance, warranty upsells and bundle children, all of which move a counter without the clicked item entering the cart; identity alone is satisfied by an item that was already there. THE CART BADGE IS NOT A SOURCE, and that is the sharpest rule in the change. An earlier draft read it as a fallback; a second opinion overturned that, correctly - many Shopify themes increment the badge and drawer CLIENT-SIDE regardless of server confirmation, so a FAILED add still animates them, and gating on optimistic UI would fabricate cart steps at scale. Only server-answered state gates: Shopify /cart.js (a decade-stable public contract that rots slower than any selector) or real /cart line-item rows. A null reading is UNKNOWN, never zero. Both readings settle symmetrically, because a before-read firing pre-hydration (sees 0) against an after-read seeing a pre-seeded item (sees 1) passes a strict delta on a cart nobody touched. BOUNDED BECAUSE IT ACTS ON A STRANGER'S STORE: quantity 1, ONE attempt, never a retry loop (N retries would be N line items, which is both rude and would inflate the very delta being verified); a click the actuator reports as intercepted is NOT ATTEMPTED rather than unconfirmed; nothing is dismissed between the click and the capture (lesson #2 - auto-dismiss slams cart drawers shut); and it stops at the cart, never toward payment (lesson #10). Attempted only where the cart is server-readable WITHOUT navigating, because reading a /cart page for the before-count would destroy the product page we are about to click. The step carries reached_by and action_evidence through BOTH explicit-allow-list projections - the same projections that silently ate the 1.12 discovery telemetry for two engine versions - so a step reached by an ACTION is never indistinguishable from one reached by a link. Locked by test/cart-verification.test.js (12 cases, each a way a naive implementation says \"added\" when nothing was added). Affects future crawls only; existing scores frozen until re-crawled.",

Most stores open the cart in a pop-up drawer with no URL to follow, so before this only 14% of ecommerce funnels reached a cart or checkout step at all. The walk now reads the store's own cart data before and after the click and only counts the step when the quantity increases and the added item matches what was clicked; a cart icon that only animates on click doesn't count."

"summary": "Funnel discovery: two bugs that made whole sites unwalkable. (1) LOCALE LOCKOUT. The 1.17 filter rejected any path whose first segment is a 2-letter code, to stop a TRANSLATED TWIN (/reviews -> /ko/reviews) inflating depth. It also rejected the ENTIRE URL SPACE of a site served under /en/: harrys.com lost 105 of 105 links including /en/cart and /en/signup/customize and was published as a 1-page capture. Now a prefix is a VARIANT only if it passes the TWIN TEST - stripping it yields a path that ALSO EXISTS in the link set. /ko/reviews is a variant because /reviews is there; /en/cart is canonical because /cart is not. \"One dominant prefix = canonical\" was considered and REJECTED: a bilingual site with bare-path English and a single /fr/ mirror has exactly one prefix, so that rule would have reintroduced the very false depth 1.17 fixed. An ISO-639-1 allowlist means only real language codes are locale-suspect - the old regex also swallowed /ai/ (a product section) and /go/ (affiliate cloak redirects). The ENTRY path is included in the twin set: links exclude the current page, so a bare /ko could not find its homepage twin and was misread as canonical - caught on top10vpn, harmless there only because a bare locale root matches no vocabulary anyway. (2) THE DEDUP HAD TO BE RE-KEYED or the locale fix is a half-fix that hides itself: `seen` is keyed on the first path segment, so under a canonical /en every link shares the segment \"en\", one passes and the rest die - a fake escape to depth 2 rather than a funnel. seg/curPath/isDescendant now compare paths with the canonical prefix stripped. (3) /register MOVED FROM SKIP TO CONV. It was skipped as an account page while /signup was a conversion step - the same page on different stacks. plausible.io's only homepage CTA is \"Start free trial\" -> /register, so the money step was actively discarded. login/sign-in stay skipped: those are for existing users. NOT propagated to capture.js's deep-walk, which FILLS FORMS while SIEVERT-BUG.md is open. MEASURED against live pages, before -> after: harrys 1 -> 3, plausible.io 1 -> 2 (via /register), shunshi.ai 1 -> 3, researchmaster.ai 1 -> 2. CONTROL HELD: top10vpn unchanged at depth 2 via /reviews with its 4 Korean variants still rejected. oxygendonuts stays depth 1 and that is CORRECT - it moved from a locale lockout to a genuine vocabulary miss. A site served entirely under a language prefix like /en/ was treated as one giant translated variant and lost every link, including cart and signup; the walk now only treats a prefix as a translation if the same path also exists without it. /register also moves from a skipped page to a conversion step, since some sites use it as the sign-up flow itself, and affected sites went from a 1-page capture to 2 or 3 pages deep."

It now also records per-gate rejection counts (locale/skip/no_vocab/seg_dedup), the entry path, and a capped, path-only sample of rejected links. Immediately separates two failure shapes that were identical in the data: harrys.com reports [locale 105] because it serves its whole site under /en/ and the locale filter - added in 1.17 to stop a TRANSLATED TWIN inflating depth - rejects all 105 of its links including /en/cart; plausible.io reports [no_vocab 70, skip 30], a vocabulary miss whose only homepage CTA is \"Start free trial\" pointing at /register, which is a SKIP token. top10vpn is the control and is unchanged at depth 2 via /reviews with 4 locale rejections that are GENUINE Korean variants. The counts nest INSIDE the existing discovery object deliberately: the captured->steps projection is an explicit field list that passes discovery whole, so a nested field survives while a new sibling would be silently dropped - which is exactly how the original telemetry was lost across two engine versions. Paths only and capped, because this object is served publicly in the teardown bundle and these are third-party URLs.",

PREVENTION, NOT A REPAIR: measured across the whole corpus at the time of the change, ZERO published primaries carried a content-shaped funnel_sig. What changed is the INCENTIVE - since the primary-row amendment the same day, a multi-step funnel outranks an entry-page one within the newest crawl, so a 3-step walk through /resources/ could have become a domain's published primary over a 1-step home walk, publishing a content journey as if it were the conversion funnel. Patched in BOTH verbatim copies of the regex (discoverFunnelLinks and discoverProductEntries) - page.evaluate cannot share closures, so the duplication is deliberate and both sites say so; changing one alone is the actual risk here. Validated with scripts/walk-depth-probe.mjs against real pages: 6/6 targets still reach >=2 steps and nngroup, the CONTENT case in the set, is unchanged at depth 2 - a tightening can always pass by detecting nothing, so the content site staying walkable is the assertion that matters. (1) LOCALE VARIANTS were valid walk steps - top10vpn walked / -> /reviews/ -> /ko/reviews/ and reported depth 3, where the third step is the KOREAN TRANSLATION of the page it was already on. That is not a shallow walk, it is a FALSE one: inflated depth and a 3-step funnel claim about two pages. A 2-letter ISO first segment (or xx-YY) is now rejected; a real path like /it-services is untouched because its segment is it-services, not it. Under the 0-hallucination rule an over-count is strictly worse than an under-count, which is why this ranked above the depth work. (2) DESCENDING INTO A SECTION WAS IMPOSSIBLE. The dedup key is the first path segment and it was SEEDED with the current page's own segment, so on /vpn/ every /vpn/<brand>/ child was rejected before any regex ran. For an affiliate or category funnel that IS the journey (category -> product review -> outbound), so those sites could only ever be depth 1. A candidate that EXTENDS the current path now passes; siblings under the same segment are still deduped. Deliberately STRUCTURAL rather than vocabulary: brand names are unbounded and no token list can hold them, but 'extends the path I am on' is provable from the URL alone. The descendant pass runs LAST, after MID/CONV - running it first regressed notion from / -> /product -> /pricing to / -> /product -> /product/features, a feature page crowding out the money step. MEASURED, NOT ASSUMED: scripts/walk-depth-probe.mjs runs the real discovery against real pages. vpn.com/vpn/ went 1 -> 5 (/vpn/ -> /vpn/cyberghost/pricing -> /vpn/expressvpn/...), top10vpn lost its fake Korean step, notion/allbirds/nngroup unchanged. A nav-section fallback was built, measured, and REJECTED: it lifted vpn.com's homepage to depth 3 but the steps were sibling categories (breadth, not a journey) and it duplicated discoverProductEntries, which already spawns those categories as sibling funnels with mode:auto - so the descendant pass alone carries them. THE FOURTH WAS ALREADY MEASURED AND SILENTLY DROPPED: heading_skips has been extracted and rolled up since 1.13 and no check ever read it, so a level jump (h2 followed by h4) was computed on every crawl and thrown away - it now closes the outline half of 1.3.1 that h1-counting alone cannot. EVERY ONE REPORTS ONLY THE FAILING SIDE, because that is the side that is provable: an absent title is measurable, a GOOD title is a judgement. Skip-link is presence-only - whether the bypass actually works needs focus simulation, and the crawler's own overlay-dismiss click perturbs focus state, which is the same reason 2.4.7 focus-visible remains deliberately unchecked. DELIBERATELY NOT ADDED: 1.4.4 resize text and 1.4.12 text spacing (both need a second render pass under injected CSS, not a passive DOM read), 3.2.2 on input and 3.3.1 error identification (behavioural - they require submitting forms, which this crawler will not do). Rollups are null-gated, never zero-defaulted, so a teardown captured before 1.16 stays SILENT on these rather than reporting a fabricated pass. "summary": "Mobile captures at deviceScaleFactor 2. worker/scan-do.js — the path that actually produces the corpus — set no deviceScaleFactor at all, so a mobile screenshot was stored 390px wide and could never be shown sharp: a phone capture rendered at its own 390 CSS px is 1x on every Apple display. Desktop stays at 1 deliberately, because a 1440px capture is already a true 2x at the 720px measure the report renders it in, and doubling it would cost roughly 4x the bytes for no visible gain. capture.js (the CLI walker) already did this for mobile; this closes the Worker gap. Capture-resolution only: no extractor, detector or scoring change, so every existing score is unaffected — but existing mobile assets stay 1x until re-crawled.",
"public": "Roentgen 1.14 fixes mobile screenshots so they render sharp. The live capture path wasn't setting a pixel density for mobile, so a phone screenshot was stored at 390px wide and looked soft on a real phone display; desktop captures were already sharp and are unchanged. No score or extraction logic changed; existing mobile images stay soft until their page is re-crawled."

"summary": "UX depth: three new deterministic check groups. WEIGHT (page weight, render-blocking count, oversized images, largest-paint element IDENTITY) - transferSize is 0 for cross-origin resources without Timing-Allow-Origin, so the total is reported as a floor (\"at least X MB across N measurable resources\") and never asserted. STRUCTURE (landmark regions, keyboard reachability). FORMS (input-type correctness, autocomplete presence, validation attributes PRESENT). DELIBERATELY NOT ADDED: LCP and TTFB timing - measured 99% and 198% spread across three identical runs on one machine (corgi.insure, neon.com), which is network noise rather than a fact; CLS - the crawler dismisses overlays and lazy-scrolls BEFORE measurement and a datacenter connection is too fast to shift, so it would systematically award false passes; focus visibility - cannot be measured deterministically from a serialized page.evaluate (the :focus-visible heuristic depends on prior input, which the overlay-dismiss click has already supplied) and it false-accuses frameworks that render the indicator on a child element. Keyboard reachability ships as verdict note, never needs_work, because addEventListener handlers are invisible to the DOM. Absence of validation attributes is never reported, because JS-driven validation is unprovable from the DOM. Display-only, zero scoring drift; affects future crawls only, existing scores frozen.",
"public": "Roentgen 1.13 adds three UX check groups: page weight and render-blocking resources, landmark regions and keyboard reachability, and form input correctness. Page weight is reported as a floor, at least X MB, since some resources can't be measured exactly, and it's never presented as a full total. These are display-only checks and don't move the conversion score."

"summary": "Funnel discovery reaches the funnel. Three separate failures fixed: (1) every CONV/MID token was anchored to the START of a path segment, so hyphen-prefixed conversion paths were invisible — corgi.insure links /instant-quote from its own homepage and we never followed it; (2) no B2B/consultative vocabulary, so talk-to-sales / book-a-call / get-advisor / request-a-quote walked past the money step, scoring every broker, agency and enterprise SaaS off a 1-page capture; (3) SKIP contained a bare `contact` token and \\b treats the hyphen as a word boundary, so /contact-sales — the B2B conversion — was ACTIVELY DISCARDED (neon.com sat on /hub/lowest twice at 20/Sparse partly because of it). `apply` was deliberately NOT added: on much of the web /apply is a job application and the deep-walk fills forms while read-back verification is still open (SIEVERT-BUG.md). discoverFunnelLinks now also RECORDS `discovery:{links_seen,candidates,matched}` on the entry step, so candidates>0 with matched===0 is a measured discovery miss rather than an ambiguous depth-1 row. Affects future crawls only; existing scores are frozen and unchanged.",
"public": "Roentgen 1.12 fixes three ways the walk could miss the actual funnel. Hyphenated conversion paths like /instant-quote weren't matching at all; B2B paths like /talk-to-sales weren't recognized as conversion steps, so consultative sales funnels scored as if they were one page; and /contact-sales was being excluded as a generic contact page instead of read as the conversion step it is. The walk also now records why a page's discovery came up empty, instead of leaving that as an unexplained single-page result."

The 2026-07-17 audit fix requiring ≥3 DISTINCT logo alt-texts (so a repeated-icon grid isn't counted as a logo wall) landed in the Worker extractor but was never ported to the CLI, which kept counting duplicates. For ~2 weeks the two engines could disagree on a SCORED tactic, so the same site could score differently depending on which one crawled it. The CLI now matches the Worker. Corpus rows recrawled after this may lose a trusted_by_logos that was never real; the Worker's behaviour is unchanged.",
"public": "Roentgen 1.11 fixes a two-week gap where the live crawler and the local tool could disagree on a score. A rule requiring at least 3 distinct logos for a trusted-by section, added to stop a grid of repeated icons from counting as one, had only been applied to one of the two engines. Both now apply it the same way; a report with a logo wall counted from repeated icons will lose it on re-crawl."

A media gate drops any candidate sitting over a photo/background-image (kept honest: a rect we can't cleanly show is dropped, never guessed). "public": "Roentgen 1.10 now records the exact on-page location of individual conversion elements, like a strikethrough price, a rating, or a countdown timer, alongside the full-page screenshot.
